Jeffrey Dampier Jr., a 39-year-old African American man, was born on March 24, 1966, on Chicago's West Side. In 1996, he won a $20 million Illinois Lottery jackpot. Following his divorce, he relocated to Tampa Bay, Florida, with his new wife, Crystal Jackson. There, he invested in a gourmet popcorn business and generously supported his extended family, including his sister-in-law, Victoria Jackson.
On July 26, 2005, Dampier was lured by Victoria Jackson, a 23-year-old African American woman, under the pretense of assisting with car troubles. Upon arrival, he was confronted by Victoria and her boyfriend, Nathaniel Jackson, a 24-year-old African American man. They bound Dampier's hands and forced him into his van at gunpoint. During the ordeal, Nathaniel assaulted Dampier while demanding money. Eventually, Nathaniel handed the firearm to Victoria, instructing her to shoot Dampier. She complied, fatally shooting him in the back of the head.
Following the murder, the Jacksons abandoned the van with Dampier's body inside and fled. They were apprehended in Jacksonville, Florida, shortly thereafter. Both were charged with first-degree murder, armed kidnapping, and armed carjacking. In 2006, Victoria Jackson was convicted and sentenced to three consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. Nathaniel Jackson received a similar sentence.
