In the early morning hours of June 1, 2015, the life of 25-year-old Wayne Michael Squires was tragically cut short. The young man was discovered deceased at the Brightwater Apartments, located near 2100 South Phoenix Avenue in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at approximately 2:45 a.m. Responding officers found that Squires had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
Wayne, who was born Shawn Leaudrey Starr on October 14, 1989, was later adopted by Bessie Lee Squires of Hominy.
He was known for his love of animals, adventure, and spending time with his family and friends. Wayne was a spiritual person who enjoyed writing rhymes and listening to music.
The investigation into the shooting pointed to a suspect who witnesses saw fleeing the scene. This individual was described as a Black man in his 20s. The investigation progressed quickly, and soon after the incident, Tulsa police arrested 20-year-old Deonte Conway. Conway was taken into custody in connection with the death of Wayne Squires.
Further details that emerged during the investigation suggested a troubled relationship between Squires and the suspect. It was reported that Squires' own brother, Hylan, and Deonte Conway had been bullying him. An eyewitness account detailed that insults were directed at Wayne before Conway allegedly pulled out a gun and shot him. Following the investigation, Deonte Conway was charged in the death of Wayne Squires.
