In the winter of 2016, the community of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, was shaken by the untimely death of Jady Abbott. A 34-year-old white female, Jady's life was cut short on the evening of Wednesday, December 14, 2016. Initial accounts described the event as a tragic and horrific accident. She was with Joseph Lane, with whom she was starting a new business, when a high-powered rifle discharged as it was being loaded, striking and killing her.
The incident, however, led to a deeper
investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discharge of the firearm. While her death was initially mourned as a terrible accident, the narrative shifted months later. On April 27, 2017, Joseph Lane was formally charged with manslaughter in connection with Jady's death, introducing a new and somber chapter to the story of her final moments.
Jady was remembered by her loved ones as a vibrant and loving individual, deeply devoted to her children and family. She had worked for over a decade as an ultrasound technician at W.W. Hastings and Tahlequah City Hospitals, where she was cherished by colleagues for her ability to bring joy and fun to the workplace. She had recently decided to leave her position to pursue a dream of opening a new business with Lane. A memorial service to honor her memory was held on Tuesday, December 20, 2016, at the Boulevard Christian Church in Muskogee, Oklahoma, where friends and family gathered to remember a life that had touched so many.
