On a cold January evening in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, the life of 46-year-old Mohid Khandker, a man of Bangladeshi descent, was tragically cut short. On Sunday, January 22, 2017, Khandker was at his place of business, a gas station and convenience store located at the intersection of Main Street and Burnham Avenue, when a robbery turned fatal. An armed assailant entered the store and shot Khandker, a husband and father to a fifteen-year-old daughter and a ten-year-old son, who had made a life for his
family in the Tulsa area for several years.
The violence did not end with the store owner's death. As the robber proceeded to the cash register after callously stepping over Khandker's body, another local resident, 40-year-old Robert Fields, innocently walked into the store. The suspect then shot Fields in the face, claiming a second victim in the brutal assault.
In the aftermath of the double homicide, law enforcement began their investigation. Their efforts led to the identification and arrest of a suspect. Thirty-seven-year-old Heath Haney was taken into custody in connection with the murders. His capture reportedly occurred while he was allegedly attempting to break into a home in Disney, Oklahoma. The community was left to mourn the senseless loss of two lives, with friends and family remembering Khandker as a kind, outgoing, and perpetually smiling man.
