In the fall of 2017, a senseless act of violence cut short the life of Shane Anderson, a 44-year-old male teacher from Tulsa, Oklahoma, who taught geography at Oneta Ridge Middle School in the Broken Arrow Public Schools district. On the evening of October 1st, his life was tragically taken when he acted to protect his wife, Darcie, and their two young daughters during a home invasion.
The perpetrator, identified as 16-year-old Deonte Green, had embarked on a violent crime spree that
day. Prior to arriving at the Anderson residence, Green had been involved in the armed robbery and sexual assault of an elderly woman. He then proceeded to the Anderson's home, where he confronted Darcie Anderson and her daughters in their garage, forcing them back into the house at gunpoint.
Upon witnessing the intruder threatening his family, Shane Anderson immediately intervened. A struggle ensued between Anderson and Green, during which Green fatally shot the beloved teacher in front of his wife and children. Green then fled the scene, continuing his crime wave with another armed robbery before being apprehended by law enforcement officers who were already actively searching for him.
Deonte Green was arrested and subsequently charged with a multitude of crimes, including first-degree murder for the death of Shane Anderson. In March 2019, Green pleaded guilty to the charges against him, which encompassed the murder, as well as 18 other felonies and one misdemeanor from his violent rampage. In July of the same year, a judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole, finding him to be 'irreparably corrupt and permanently incorrigible.' The sentence brought a measure of justice to the grieving family and community, though it could never bring back the dedicated husband, father, and educator whose life was so violently stolen.
