In Tulsa, Oklahoma, a 25-year-old woman named Iesha Wallace lost her life to gun violence on March 17, 2018. The circumstances of her death, initially reported as a suicide by her boyfriend, quickly became the subject of a homicide investigation. Emergency responders found her inside an apartment with a pistol next to her, a scene that at first glance could have supported the claim of self-harm.
Her boyfriend, 30-year-old Jermico Willis, was the one who made the initial report, telling
authorities that Iesha had taken her own life. However, detectives at the scene began to notice that the evidence before them did not align with Willis's account of the events. The inconsistencies in his statements and the physical evidence in the apartment raised suspicions, prompting a deeper look into the tragic incident. Willis, who had a previous felony conviction, was initially arrested for possession of a firearm.
The turning point in the investigation came with the results of the autopsy. The state medical examiner's office determined that the gunshot wound Iesha sustained was not a contact wound, indicating that the gun was fired from a distance of likely three feet away. This finding directly contradicted the possibility of a self-inflicted wound. Based on the autopsy and the conflicting evidence, the investigation shifted from a potential suicide to a homicide. Subsequently, the charge against Jermico Willis was elevated to first-degree murder. He was taken into custody and held at the Tulsa County jail.
