In a tragic turn of events on a Monday morning in Duncan, Oklahoma, Rebecca Noel Vescio-Varela, a 31-year-old female, lost her life in a violent encounter. The incident, which unfolded in the parking lot of a local Walmart on November 18, 2019, also claimed the life of 39-year-old Aubrey Perkins.
Rebecca, who was an employee at the Walmart but not on duty at the time, and Perkins had just exited the store and entered a vehicle.
It was then that they were confronted by Wbiliado Varela, Jr., Rebecca's 43-year-old ex-husband. In an act of domestic violence, Varela exited his own vehicle and approached the car occupied by Rebecca and Perkins. He was armed with a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol.
Without warning, Varela fired multiple rounds into the windshield of the vehicle, striking both Rebecca and Perkins multiple times. The parking lot, busy with morning shoppers, became a scene of chaos as horrified onlookers ran for cover. After shooting his ex-wife and Perkins, Varela walked to the rear of their car and turned the gun on himself, ending his own life with a single gunshot.
When police arrived at the scene shortly after 9:30 a.m., all three individuals were deceased. The investigation, which included a review of Walmart's security footage, quickly determined the incident to be a double-murder suicide stemming from a domestic dispute. As the perpetrator took his own life at the scene, there were no arrests to be made in connection with the deaths of Rebecca Vescio Varela and Aubrey Perkins. The community was left to mourn the loss of two of its members in a senseless act of violence.
