Robert Crotteau, aged 42, tragically lost his life on November 21, 2004, in Meteor, Wisconsin, during a horrific incident that has since been referred to as the 'Deer Woods Murder.' On that fateful day, Chai Soua Vang, a 36-year-old man from St. Paul, Minnesota, opened fire on a group of hunters, killing six people, including Robert Crotteau and his 20-year-old son, Joey Crotteau.
The incident began when Vang, who was trespassing on private hunting land, was confronted by the group of hunters. An argument ensued, during which Vang claimed he was threatened and fired upon first. However, evidence and testimonies during the trial painted a different picture. Vang, a skilled marksman and National Guard veteran, used a 7.62×39mm semiautomatic rifle to shoot eight people, killing six and wounding two.
Robert Crotteau was shot through the heart, while his son Joey was shot four times in the back, with the final bullet striking his neck and head. The other victims were similarly executed, with Vang firing a total of 22 shots before running out of ammunition. The brutality of the attack shocked the community and the nation, as it was one of the rare instances where a mass shooting occurred in a hunting context.
Chai Soua Vang was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with multiple counts of first-degree intentional homicide. During his trial, Vang pleaded self-defense, but the jury found him guilty on all counts. He was sentenced to six consecutive life terms plus 70 years without the possibility of parole. The trial highlighted the cultural tensions and misunderstandings between the Hmong community, to which Vang belonged, and the predominantly white rural population in the area.
The case also led to discussions about hunting safety and the need for better communication and understanding among hunters of different backgrounds. The tragic deaths of Robert and Joey Crotteau, along with the other victims, remain a somber reminder of the potential for violence in situations of conflict and misunderstanding.
