The primary suspect in this case was Ashlee Martinson, the 17-year-old stepdaughter of Thomas Ayers.
Martinson was charged with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide for the deaths of her mother and stepfather. According to court records, Martinson had endured years of mental, verbal, and physical abuse from Thomas Ayers, which she claimed led to the tragic events. On the day of the incident, after a confrontation with her parents about her relationship with her boyfriend, Martinson shot Thomas Ayers and then stabbed Jennifer Ayers more than 30 times.
Following the murders, Martinson fled to Indiana with her boyfriend, Ryan Sisco, where they were apprehended by authorities. Martinson faced additional charges of false imprisonment for locking her three younger siblings in a room with food before fleeing. During the investigation, it was revealed that Martinson had severe depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, which were factors in her defense.
Martinson initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity but later changed her plea to guilty on two counts of second-degree homicide. She was sentenced to 23 years in prison, followed by 17 years of extended supervision.
