On the evening of October 29, 2015, Lujuane Harrington, a 26-year-old Black/African American male, was fatally shot in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The incident that led to his death began with a dispute over a dice game in which Harrington had won money from Roderick McGinnis, also 26. Seeking retaliation, McGinnis orchestrated a meeting with Harrington under the guise of wanting to see some sunglasses that Harrington was selling.
The arranged meeting spot was near the intersection of 61st and Villard.
When Harrington arrived at the location, he approached the vehicle where McGinnis was waiting. As he neared the driver's side of the car, McGinnis suddenly emerged from the rear seat and fired a single, fatal shot. A witness to the event heard the loud gunshot and saw Harrington attempt to run before he collapsed. This witness identified McGinnis as the person who fired the weapon.
Following an investigation into the shooting, Roderick McGinnis was arrested and faced serious charges for his role in the death of Lujuane Harrington. He was charged with first-degree reckless homicide and possession of a firearm by a felon. The legal proceedings concluded on September 28, 2016, when McGinnis pleaded guilty to the homicide charge. He was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison, to be followed by a decade of extended supervision.
