Michael Prescott, a 21-year-old Black / African American male, was shot and killed on November 10, 2015, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The incident occurred outside a friend's home near 12th and Reservoir. Prescott was inside his friend's car, warming it up, while she stood in the doorway of her residence. It was then that a man ran up to the driver's side of the vehicle and opened fire, fatally wounding Prescott. The shooting was described as a crime of passion, fueled by jealousy.
The individual responsible for Michael Prescott's death was identified as Dwayne Chaney, the ex-boyfriend of Prescott's friend. After the shooting, Chaney entered the woman's home, struck her in the head, and yelled, "It's your fault! Now I'm going to jail for the rest of my life!" before fleeing the scene. Chaney managed to evade capture for approximately eighteen months before being apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department.
Following his capture, Dwayne Chaney was charged with first-degree intentional homicide. During his trial, Chaney attended the first three days of proceedings but then absconded after cutting off his GPS monitoring device. Despite his absence, a jury found him guilty. On January 12, 2018, Chaney was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. At his sentencing, he offered condolences to Prescott's family but maintained his innocence.
