Jenny Dawn Ward, a 36-year-old Caucasian female, had her life tragically cut short on July 30, 2016, in a violent encounter in her Eau Claire, Wisconsin, home. In the early morning hours, her neighbor, Shane Helmbrecht, broke into her residence and fatally shot her. Ward’s children were present in the home at the time of the incident and were able to provide an account of the harrowing events to law enforcement.
According to their statement, Helmbrecht referred to their mother as a "demon" before shooting her multiple times with a rifle.
Responding police officers apprehended Helmbrecht as he was attempting to flee the scene in his truck, and a rifle was discovered in his vehicle. Upon his arrest, Helmbrecht told investigators that he had been hearing voices in his head. He claimed these voices compelled him to act, stating he believed he was "casting demons to hell" because they "eat babies." It was also reported that he had admitted to using methamphetamine the day before the shooting. In the immediate aftermath, Helmbrecht was charged with first-degree intentional homicide, and his bail was set at $1 million.
The legal proceedings against Shane Helmbrecht have been a protracted affair, largely centered on his mental state at the time of the offense and his fitness to stand trial. In 2017, he was found incompetent to face the charges and was subsequently committed to a mental health facility. His case took another turn in September 2023, when he escaped from a group home at the Tomah Veterans Hospital. His time as a fugitive was short-lived, as he was apprehended in Mexico in November 2023 and returned to the United States to face justice. After his capture, legal efforts to determine his competency resumed, and in September 2024, a judge ruled that Shane Helmbrecht was competent to stand trial for the murder of Jenny Ward, paving the way for the homicide case to finally move forward.
