On a tragic Wednesday, March 22, 2017, Jason T. Weiland, a 40-year-old Caucasian male, lost his life in the line of duty. A detective for the Everest Metropolitan Police Department, he was a dedicated law enforcement officer with 18 years of service. The events that led to his untimely death began as a domestic dispute that escalated into a violent rampage across the Wausau area. The day's horror commenced when a man, later identified as Nengmy Vang, targeted individuals connected to his estranged wife.
The chain of violence started at the Marathon Savings Bank in Rothschild, where Vang shot and killed two bank employees, Dianne Look and Karen Barclay. From there, he proceeded to a law office in Schofield, where he murdered his wife's attorney, Sara Quirt Sann. The deadly spree culminated in Weston, where Vang barricaded himself inside his apartment. As law enforcement, including Detective Weiland, established a perimeter around the building, Vang opened fire. A bullet from his high-powered rifle struck Weiland, killing him at the scene.
What followed was a tense standoff that lasted for several hours. Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies surrounded the apartment complex, attempting to negotiate with Vang. The standoff ended in an exchange of gunfire, during which Vang was wounded. He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Ten days later, on April 1, 2017, Nengmy Vang succumbed to his injuries and died. Subsequent investigations concluded that the officers who returned fire were justified in their actions, bringing a somber end to a case that claimed four innocent lives and shook the community to its core.
