On the evening of March 15, 2018, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Romale R. Richardson, a 34-year-old Black male, was fatally shot. The incident unfolded at a residence in the 4200 block of N. 27th Street on the city's north side, where a dice game was taking place. Another man, 20-year-old Malyk T. Smith, also lost his life in the violent encounter.
According to the criminal complaint, the gunman, Antonio Darnell Mays, who was 44 at the time, forced his way into the home and opened fire.
A shootout ensued, during which Richardson was able to wound Mays before he succumbed to his own injuries. A third individual was also injured during the incident and later sought treatment at a hospital. The shooting was reportedly the result of a dispute that arose during the dice game.
The Milwaukee Police Department launched an investigation and quickly identified Mays as the suspect. He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree reckless homicide for the deaths of Richardson and Smith. At the time of the offense, Mays was under supervision for a prior armed robbery conviction, and he faced an additional charge of possession of a firearm by a felon.
