On May 16, 2018, the life of 24-year-old Rayshawn Jackson, a Black male, was cut tragically short in Madison, Wisconsin. He was the victim of a fatal shooting, an event that would ultimately lead to the arrest and conviction of his killer. The incident unfolded outside an apartment building on Waunona Woods Court on the city's South Side, where an argument between Jackson and another man escalated to a devastating conclusion.
The dispute, reportedly over a woman, resulted in Jackson
being shot in the head at close range. For five days, he clung to life, but the severity of his injuries proved insurmountable, and he succumbed to the gunshot wound. His death was ruled a homicide, prompting an investigation by the Madison Police Department to bring the person responsible to justice.
The investigation led to the identification and arrest of Antonio R. Gentry, then 36 years old. Authorities charged Gentry with first-degree intentional homicide in what was described as an "execution-style" shooting. In addition to the homicide charge, Gentry faced multiple other felony charges for allegedly attempting to shoot at members of Jackson's family and other witnesses following the initial incident. He was also accused of attempting to flee the scene by carjacking vehicles.
In October 2019, Antonio Gentry was sentenced for his crimes. After pleading guilty to amended charges of second-degree intentional homicide, felony possession of a firearm, and armed robbery, he received a sentence of 30 years in prison, to be followed by 10 years of extended supervision. During the legal proceedings, it was revealed that there had been a history of violence between Gentry and Jackson, stemming from a romantic relationship with the same woman.
