In what was described by authorities as a murder-suicide, 54-year-old Alan Skarzynski, a White / Caucasian male, was found deceased on October 2, 2018, in a townhouse located in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The discovery was made after a concerned neighbor contacted the police, reporting that they had not seen Skarzynski in several days. The neighbor noted that his work truck, filled with expensive tools, had been parked on the street, and mail was beginning to accumulate.
This prompted a welfare check at his residence on Albany Court.
Upon their arrival, police officers found the doors to the townhouse barricaded with furniture, preventing their entry. The Waukesha Fire Department was called to the scene to assist. Firefighters used an extended ladder to gain access to the home through a second-floor bedroom window. Once inside, they discovered Skarzynski's body in a closet in an upstairs bedroom. He was found holding a small silver handgun with his finger on the trigger.
Further investigation of the residence led to the discovery of a second individual, 33-year-old Dustin Congleton, in the basement utility room. Congleton's body was partially covered by a sheet and was surrounded by a significant amount of blood. In addition to the handgun found with Skarzynski, another. 22 caliber handgun and a hunting-style knife were recovered from the scene. While it was determined that Skarzynski and Congleton were acquainted, the exact nature of their relationship was not immediately clear.
The preliminary findings of the Waukesha Police Department suggested that Skarzynski had shot Congleton before taking his own life. As this was investigated as a murder-suicide, there were no arrests made, and no other suspects were sought in connection with the deaths. Neighbors remembered Skarzynski as a friendly and easygoing handyman.
