On the evening of August 14, 2019, 18-year-old Maurice Grimes was found shot and killed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A citizen alerted police to a gunshot victim in a vehicle near 7th and Pierce at approximately 9:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they discovered Grimes in the driver's seat of an SUV with a fatal gunshot wound to his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and an autopsy later confirmed his death as a homicide.
The investigation into the death of Maurice Grimes led police to
23-year-old Jamon Washington, also of Milwaukee. Washington believed that Grimes was responsible for a burglary at his home that had occurred on August 8, 2019, just six days prior to the shooting. Investigators utilized surveillance footage which captured a large, dark truck without license plates in the area around the time of the homicide. The video showed a man, later identified as Washington, getting into Grimes' vehicle. Shortly after, a muzzle flash was visible through the front windshield.
On August 23, 2019, Jamon Washington was arrested and charged with first-degree intentional homicide and the use of a dangerous weapon in connection with the death of Maurice Grimes. The criminal complaint detailed that Washington had reported the burglary to the police and had suspected Grimes of being involved, which ultimately led to the fatal encounter. He was held in the Milwaukee County Jail with bail set at $100,000.
Maurice Grimes was remembered by his family as a young man who was passionate about learning how cars worked. His mother, Laporche Kimber, described him as being determined to achieve his goals without resorting to a life on the streets. She expressed that even with an arrest, the justice system could not provide complete closure as it could not bring her son back.
