On a cold December evening in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the life of 17-year-old Dreonna Swan Murphy, a young Black/African American woman, was tragically cut short. On December 5, 2020, what should have been a night of youthful celebration turned into a scene of violence and loss. Dreonna was hosting a party at her own home, a gathering of friends and peers that filled the space with music and energy.
The party was in full swing when, at approximately 11:20 p.m., the festive atmosphere was
shattered by the sound of a gunshot. The single shot, fired in the basement of the residence near 86th Place and West Silver Spring Drive, found its mark in Dreonna. When emergency services arrived, they found her with a single gunshot wound. Despite any efforts to save her, Dreonna was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the immediate aftermath, the Milwaukee Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. Detectives began interviewing witnesses who were present at the party, piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Based on the information gathered from those at the scene, authorities were quickly able to identify a person of interest. Shortly after the incident, a 17-year-old male was taken into custody in connection with Dreonna's death.
Following the arrest, the police indicated that the investigation was ongoing as they worked to determine the circumstances and motive behind the shooting. It was announced that criminal charges against the teenage suspect would be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office in the days to come. However, the name of the suspect was not publicly released. The community was left to mourn the sudden and violent loss of a young life, while questions about what transpired in the final moments of Dreonna Swan Murphy's life remained.
