On a spring morning in Milwaukee, a life was tragically cut short, leaving a family to grapple with a sudden and violent loss. Roberto Velez, a 25-year-old Hispanic male, was at his home on 54th and Melvina on April 21, 2021. Around 11:30 a.m., he stepped outside to conduct a marijuana sale with a couple of acquaintances. The transaction, however, was interrupted by the arrival of two strangers who were not involved in the deal.
An exchange of words between Velez and the two men quickly
escalated. The newcomers began firing at Velez, who was shot multiple times. In the midst of the attack, Velez reportedly returned fire. The two individuals who were there for the drug transaction fled in their car to escape the gunfire but later returned to the scene and contacted the police to report what they had witnessed. Velez was rushed to Froedtert Hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The Milwaukee Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. Detectives believe the two suspects may have been in the area with the intention of stealing a car when the fatal encounter occurred. The suspects were vaguely described as two Black males. Despite appeals to the public for information and the efforts of law enforcement, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Roberto Velez. The case remains an open investigation, with police still seeking leads to bring his killers to justice.
Roberto Velez was a husband and a father to five children. His death left a void in the lives of his family, which includes his parents and several siblings, who remember him as a loving family man. His loved ones continue to await answers and hope for the day when those responsible for his death will be held accountable.
