On a summer evening in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a 23-year-old Black/African American woman named Brittany Alexis Meyer became a victim of gun violence on Sunday, June 13, 2021. The fatal shooting occurred near 21st and Galena, leaving her two young sons, ages one and two, without their mother. Her family remembered her as a pretty girl who dearly loved her children.
The investigation into her death led to the arrest of 28-year-old Dequan McMillon, the father of Meyer's two children.
At the time of the shooting, McMillon was out on bail for two separate cases, one of which involved a previous attack on Meyer. In November 2020, just seven months before her death, McMillon had been accused of punching Meyer in the face and strangling her to the point of unconsciousness. For that incident, his cash bail had been set at $250.
In January 2023, a jury found Dequan McMillon guilty of first-degree intentional homicide and other charges related to Meyer's death. The following month, he was sentenced to life in prison. According to court records, he will be eligible for extended supervision in 2050. The tragic death of Brittany Meyer highlighted the devastating impact of domestic violence and sparked pleas from her family for an end to senseless killings.
