Meshala Bell Pabai, aged 31, tragically lost her life on February 22, 2020, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The incident occurred during a heated family dispute at a residence near North 24th Place and Auer Avenue. The altercation began over a water bill, escalating quickly into a physical confrontation. During the dispute, Meshala's brother, Deandre Bell, grabbed a handgun and fatally shot both Meshala and her girlfriend, Aubrianna Lancaster.
Deandre Bell was initially charged with two counts
of first-degree reckless homicide, facing up to 120 years in prison if convicted by a jury. However, he later pleaded guilty to amended charges of homicide by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon and second-degree reckless homicide. As a result, he was sentenced to nine years in prison for the homicide charge, along with six years of extended supervision. Additionally, Bell received a four-year prison sentence for the weapons charge, with five years of extended supervision. The sentences are to be served consecutively, totaling 14 years, but with credit for time already served, Bell has approximately nine years remaining.
The case has left the families of both victims devastated. During the sentencing, Deandre Bell expressed remorse, apologizing to his family and Lancaster's family, acknowledging the pain caused by his actions. Despite his apology, some family members, including his sister Melanie Bell, remain unforgiving, emphasizing the innocence of the victims and the senselessness of the violence.
The investigation revealed that Meshala and Aubrianna had moved to Milwaukee from North St. Petersburg, Florida, to be closer to family and to support Deandre, who had recently come out as gay. The couple had been living with Deandre and his partner, sharing an apartment in the Franklin Heights neighborhood. Financial strains and ongoing friction over household expenses contributed to the tension that ultimately led to the fatal confrontation.
