On a late morning in June 2021, the life of Hannah Rose Miller, a 26-year-old Caucasian female from Rhinelander, Wisconsin, was tragically cut short. Her body was discovered on the side of River Bend Road on June 30, 2021, where she had been left after being fatally shot. A recent graduate of a dental assistant program, Hannah was a devoted mother to her young daughter and was looking forward to starting a new career to better provide for her child.
Family and friends described her as a loving mother and a caring friend who was on the verge of leaving an abusive relationship.
The immediate investigation by the Oneida County Sheriff's Office pointed to her ex-boyfriend, 30-year-old Christopher Terrell Anderson, as the primary suspect. Anderson, with whom Hannah shared her daughter, had a history of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse against her. In the weeks leading up to her death, Anderson had allegedly been planning to kill Hannah and her parents and kidnap their child. Evidence revealed he had enlisted the help of a friend, Seth Wakefield, to watch Hannah's apartment in the days before the murder. Just weeks before her death, a fearful Hannah had reported to the police that Anderson had taken her vehicle and that she was afraid he would kill her.
Following the discovery of Hannah's body, a multi-state manhunt was launched for Anderson, who was considered armed and dangerous. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and U.S. Marshals, searched for him for over two months. While Anderson was on the run, police arrested his accomplice, Seth Wakefield, for his role in plotting the murder. The search for Anderson finally came to an end on September 7, 2021, when a confidential informant led authorities to his location in Carol Stream, Illinois, where he was taken into custody without incident.
Christopher Anderson was extradited back to Oneida County to face charges. He eventually pleaded guilty to first-degree intentional homicide. During the sentencing, the judge detailed the extensive history of abuse documented in text messages between Anderson and Miller, calling the murder "the acts of an assassin" rather than a crime of passion. Anderson was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of supervised release. His accomplice, Seth Wakefield, later pleaded no contest to being a party to the crime and was sentenced to five and a half years in prison.
