In the quiet community of Rothschild, Wisconsin, a day of tragedy unfolded on March 22, 2017, forever altering the lives of many. Dianne "Dee-Dee" Look, a 67-year-old Caucasian female, was among the victims of a senseless act of violence that shook the town to its core. A beloved and familiar face to many, Dianne was the manager of the Marathon Savings Bank, where her warm smile and kind words were a daily fixture for the hundreds of customers she served. Her life, however, was abruptly cut short in a hail of gunfire that afternoon.
The incident began to unfold around 1:30 p.m. when law enforcement received reports of an active shooter. The suspect, later identified as 45-year-old Nengmy Vang, had entered the Marathon Savings Bank and opened fire, killing Dianne and a coworker, Karen Barclay. The motive for this violent outburst was later determined to be rooted in a domestic violence incident. Vang's violent spree did not end at the bank; he proceeded to a law office in Schofield, where he claimed another life, that of attorney Sara Quirt Sann. The tragic events culminated in a standoff at an apartment in Weston, where Vang had barricaded himself.
After several hours of negotiations, an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement resulted in Vang being injured. He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment of his wounds. However, just over a week later, on April 1, 2017, Nengmy Vang succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. His death brought a somber end to the investigation, closing the case on the man responsible for the deaths of four innocent people, including a responding police officer, Detective Jason Weiland of the Everest Metropolitan Police Department.
