On a summer day in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 66-year-old Roberta Haynes, a Black female, found her life tragically cut short. On June 23, 2022, Haynes was near the intersection of Palmer and Chambers when a gunfight erupted. She was not the intended target but became an innocent victim caught in the deadly crossfire. A single gunshot wound struck her, and though she was rushed to a hospital, she ultimately succumbed to her injury.
The investigation into her death led Milwaukee police to two
brothers, Kamari and Marquan Roy. They were identified as participants in the shootout that claimed Haynes' life. On July 12, 2022, Kamari Roy was apprehended by police following a foot chase. During his arrest, a handgun he dropped was recovered and later identified as the weapon used in the fatal shooting.
During questioning, Marquan Roy admitted to being present and armed during the incident. Confronted with his brother's statement, Kamari Roy also admitted to firing his weapon, claiming it was in self-defense and that he was aiming at two other individuals involved in the gunfight. Based on the brothers' statements, investigators determined it was unlikely that the shots fired by the other parties struck Haynes.
Kamari and Marquan Roy were subsequently charged with first-degree reckless homicide for the death of Roberta Haynes. Kamari Roy was bound over for trial in late December 2022, with further court proceedings scheduled for the brothers in January 2023.
