In the early morning hours of July 22, 2022, a tragic story unfolded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that ended the life of 41-year-old Valentino Stokes, a Black male. What began as a night out ended in a fatal shooting that also claimed the life of 37-year-old Christopher Bugembe. The incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. near the intersection of West Fond du Lac Avenue and Congress.
According to police investigations, the two men were leaving a bar in the area when an assailant, or assailants,
in a newer model gray Dodge Durango opened fire. Both Stokes and Bugembe sustained serious injuries in the attack. They were transported to a local hospital, but tragically, both men succumbed to their wounds and were pronounced dead shortly after 3:30 a.m.
In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement officials began the difficult task of piecing together the events of that night. Investigators have stated they believe Christopher Bugembe was the intended target of the shooting. They have described Valentino Stokes as an innocent victim who was tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time. Police have indicated that they have a person of interest and are close to solving the case, but were seeking further evidence to formally connect the suspect to the crime.
