Dantoni Aubrey, a 23-year-old from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, tragically lost his life on October 29, 2022, in a shooting incident that occurred near 33rd and Center. The incident stemmed from a dispute over the cost of marijuana. According to reports, Richard Lewis, 22, admitted to opening fire on a vehicle during an argument over the price of marijuana.
The altercation escalated when Lewis believed the seller was reaching for something, prompting him to fire multiple shots at the vehicle.
On the day of the incident, police found a crashed Honda Civic at the scene, with two injured men outside the vehicle. Aubrey was pronounced dead at the scene, having suffered 11 gunshot wounds from five bullets. His daughter, a toddler, was also in the vehicle but managed to crawl out through a window unharmed. Ke'waun Scott, 25, who was also in the vehicle, was seriously injured and placed on life support.
Richard Lewis faces multiple charges, including first-degree reckless homicide, first-degree reckless injury, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, possession of a firearm by a felon, and armed robbery. Surveillance footage and text message evidence played a crucial role in identifying Lewis as the shooter. The footage showed Lewis being dropped off in a Jetta, sitting on the steps of a nearby home, and then engaging in a conversation with the occupants of the vehicle before the shooting occurred. Additionally, text messages between Lewis and one of the victims indicated a planned meeting for the marijuana transaction.
Following the shooting, Lewis was involved in a robbery at a gas station about 45 minutes later. He was on DOC supervision via a GPS monitoring bracelet, which he tampered with an hour before the shooting. Lewis admitted to firing the shots during the argument over the marijuana price and claimed he acted in self-defense when he thought the seller was reaching for something.
