On a cold February day in 1996, the quiet community of Moses Lake, Washington, was shattered by an act of violence that would leave an indelible mark on the town. Inside the walls of Frontier Junior High School, 14-year-old Manuel Vela Jr., a male student, was in his fifth-period Algebra class when a fellow student, 14-year-old Barry Loukaitis, entered the room carrying a rifle and two handguns.
In an instant, the normal school day turned into a scene of terror.
Loukaitis opened fire, and Manuel Vela Jr. was tragically killed. The gunfire also claimed the lives of another student, Arnie Fritz, and their teacher, Leona Caires. A third student, Natalie Hintz, was wounded but survived. The horrifying event unfolded as Loukaitis held his classmates hostage. The siege came to an end when a gym teacher, Jonathan Lane, bravely subdued the shooter, disarming him and preventing further loss of life.
Barry Loukaitis was immediately arrested at the scene. His subsequent trial revealed a troubled home life and his fascination with violent media. He was tried as an adult and convicted on multiple counts of murder and kidnapping. Loukaitis was initially sentenced to two life terms plus 205 years without the possibility of parole. This sentence was later reduced to 189 years in prison. The community of Moses Lake was left to grapple with the profound loss and the devastating impact of the school shooting.
