Nhan Ai Nguyen, aged 26, was one of the victims of the tragic Trang Dai massacre that occurred on July 5, 1998, in Tacoma, Washington. The massacre took place at the Trang Dai Cafe, a popular karaoke bar in the Lincoln Business District, which had recently started offering karaoke services. On that fateful night, three masked gunmen entered the cafe just after 1:30 a.m. and opened fire, killing five people and wounding five others.
Among the deceased were Nhan Ai Nguyen, Duy Le Hai Le Tuong Hung Do and waitress Tuyen Vo.
The investigation revealed that the massacre was likely gang-related, stemming from a feud between rival gang members. The suspects were believed to be targeting a specific patron due to a personal grievance, although the intended target only suffered a minor injury. The crime scene was chaotic, with 41 shots fired, and the attackers managed to escape quickly. The incident remains one of Tacoma's worst mass slayings.
In the aftermath of the massacre, Tacoma police launched a large-scale operation to apprehend the suspects. On July 18, 1998, officers searched nine homes and arrested four individuals. A fifth suspect was arrested the following day. The investigation led to the discovery of an AK-47 at one of the suspects' homes, which was traced back to Bull's Eye Shooter Supply, the same gun shop linked to the Beltway sniper attacks. The suspected ringleader, Ri Le, aged 22, killed his younger half-brother, Khanh Trinh and then himself in a murder-suicide pact as police closed in. Another suspect, Samath Mom committed suicide in jail shortly after his arrest.
The remaining suspects, Jimmie Chea, Marvin Leo, Veasna Sok, Sarun Truck Ngeth, and John Phet, were eventually convicted and sentenced. The case highlighted the violent undercurrents within the local gang scene and the devastating impact of gang-related violence on the community. The Trang Dai massacre remains a somber reminder of the need for continued efforts to address gang violence and ensure public safety.
