In the early hours of March 25, 2006, the life of 22-year-old Justin Grant Unin "Sushi" Schwartz was tragically cut short in Seattle, Washington. An Asian male, Justin was one of six victims who lost their lives in a mass shooting that unfolded at a rave afterparty in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The promising young man, born on April 28, 1983, in Bethel, Alaska, was a proud member of the Cup'ik Tribe from Chevak.
He had a vibrant personality and excelled in various pursuits, including athletics and music.
Justin had a bright future ahead of him. He graduated from the Missouri Military Academy in 2002 and was actively involved in student government at South Seattle Community College at the time of his death. Known for his love of travel, music, and his dedication to his heritage, he was a cherished son and grandson. His family, including his mother Debra Schwartz and grandfather Kenneth Schwartz, were left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a young man they remembered as a well-loved child with a charismatic way about him.
The perpetrator of the horrific act was identified as Kyle Huff. After the initial shooting at the party, Huff took his own life. The incident, which became known as the Capitol Hill massacre, was a senseless act of violence that left the community in shock and mourning.
