In the summer of 2014, a domestic argument in a Tacoma, Washington apartment escalated into a tragedy that ended the life of 28-year-old Renee Brooks, a Caucasian female. On July 3rd, what began as a verbal dispute between Renee and her 48-year-old husband, Darrin Brooks, turned violent. In the heat of the moment, Darrin Brooks produced a gun and shot his wife multiple times in the head before fleeing their apartment.
For a day, Renee's absence went unnoticed.
It wasn't until a friend, concerned after not hearing from her, went to the apartment on July 4th that the grim discovery was made. The friend found Renee deceased in her bedroom, lying on a mattress and covered in blood, and immediately contacted the authorities. Investigators arriving at the scene noted signs of a struggle. Neighbors would later report hearing two or three "pops" on the morning of July 4th and seeing Darrin Brooks running from the apartment.
The search for Darrin Brooks was short-lived. On July 5th, patrol officers spotted him driving a stolen vehicle. A brief chase ensued after he ran a red light in an attempt to evade them. The pursuit ended when the stolen car jumped a curb and slid onto a lawn. Brooks was then taken into custody at gunpoint. During his interview with detectives, he admitted to arguing with his wife and that the fight had become physical. He claimed to have blacked out and could not remember the specifics of what happened next. He reportedly told detectives, "I can't believe I just did this."
Darrin Brooks was subsequently charged with second-degree murder. Initially, he pleaded not guilty, and his bail was set at $1 million. However, he later pleaded guilty to the charge. In court, he expressed remorse, stating he was in a dark place at the time of the killing, struggling with drug and alcohol abuse. Despite his apology, the judge handed down a 38-year prison sentence, exceeding the plea agreement's recommendation and ensuring he would likely spend the remainder of his life incarcerated for the death of his wife.
