In the summer of 2015, a tragedy unfolded in a home in Shelton, Washington, cutting short the life of a young child. On the evening of July 23rd, concerned for the well-being of her estranged husband and two small children, a woman requested that authorities perform a welfare check at their residence. She had recently separated from her husband, Sean Durcan, and he had become despondent after being served with divorce papers.
Upon their arrival at the house located near Lake Limerick,
Mason County sheriff's deputies were met with an unnerving scene. A strong smell of gasoline hung in the air, hinting at a potentially more devastating plan. Inside the home, they discovered a four-year-old boy, miraculously unharmed, in the living room. However, a further search of the residence revealed a heartbreaking outcome.
In another part of the house, deputies found the body of 52-year-old Sean Durcan, who had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Lying nearby was his 17-month-old son, Tiberius Durcan, who was also deceased. The investigation concluded that in a devastating act of murder-suicide, Sean Durcan had taken the life of his young male child before taking his own. No other individuals were considered suspects in the case, as the evidence pointed solely to the father as the perpetrator. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the specific cause of the toddler's death. The surviving child was safely reunited with his mother in the wake of the tragic events.
