In the early hours of August 20, 2015, the life of 49-year-old Debra Christie, a White female from Bellingham, Washington, was tragically cut short. On the deck of her apartment on Otis Street, she was fatally shot in the head with a. 32-caliber bullet. The harrowing event unfolded moments after she had introduced her 11-year-old son to the man who would be her killer, a man she knew as Raymond.
The perpetrator was later identified as Raymond Hamilton Gilbert III, then 33 years old.
In the time leading up to the murder, Gilbert had been in a state of emotional distress, reportedly arguing with his ex-girlfriend over issues concerning their child. The motive for the seemingly random act of violence against Christie, however, was rooted in a dispute she had with Gilbert's close friend, Barry Williamson. Williamson, who lived in the same apartment complex as Christie, had previously threatened her after she complained about loud music. This altercation led to Christie obtaining a restraining order against Williamson, who was arrested for violating it just days before the murder.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Gilbert fled the scene. A neighbor who heard the gunshot confronted Gilbert, who chillingly remarked, "I just shot his grandma," before running off. Less than an hour after killing Christie, Gilbert sent a text message to his friend Williamson, stating, "I love you you'll never have to worry about the bitch again." As law enforcement began their search, Gilbert climbed onto the roof of a local taphouse and confessed to his father over the phone that he had shot a woman named Debbie. His father then contacted the police.
Later that same morning, at 4:49 a.m., Raymond Hamilton Gilbert III turned himself in at the Whatcom County Jail. Police discovered evidence connecting him to the crime, including. 32-caliber shell casings in an ammunition box on his boat that matched the casing found at the scene. In September 2016, Gilbert pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with a deadly weapon. He was sentenced to 23 years and four months in prison, the maximum penalty under state guidelines.
