On an April evening in 2018, the life of 48-year-old David Ray Garcia, a Hispanic male from Port Orchard, Washington, came to a tragic and violent end. What began as a social gathering with a friend descended into a fatal confrontation. The man he was with, 38-year-old Shawn Michael Dean Hamlin, would later recount a night fueled by alcohol and a disagreement that spiraled out of control.
The two men, described as acquaintances, were at Garcia's residence when an argument erupted.
The dispute escalated to a physical altercation, during which Hamlin claimed a pistol he was holding discharged, striking Garcia. After the shot, Hamlin gathered his belongings, including some Airsoft guns, and left the home. He later told investigators he didn't believe Garcia was seriously injured and therefore did not call for help. He claimed to have returned to the residence later to check on Garcia but received no answer at the door.
It wasn't until the following evening, April 21st, that Garcia's body was discovered by a friend who had gone to check on him. Law enforcement was called to the scene, and it was evident that Garcia had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. An autopsy would later confirm the cause of death as a homicide. The investigation quickly pointed to Hamlin as the primary suspect.
Following the discovery of Garcia's body and media attention on the case, Hamlin contacted the sheriff's office, stating he had information about what had occurred. After being interviewed by detectives, Shawn Michael Dean Hamlin was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and first-degree burglary. His bail was set at one million dollars. Initially, Hamlin pleaded not guilty, with his mother defending him as not being a violent person. However, he later changed his plea to guilty on both charges. In August 2018, a judge sentenced Hamlin to 16 years in prison for the death of David Ray Garcia. During the sentencing, friends and family of Garcia remembered him as a generous and kind-hearted individual, expressing their profound grief over his senseless death.
