In the summer of 2019, a tragic and senseless act of violence cut short the life of Misty Hirsch, a 38-year-old woman of Blackfeet and Salish heritage. On July 7, in Mead, Washington, what began as a dispute over a stolen purse escalated into a fatal drive-by shooting that left a community in shock and a family mourning the loss of a mother, daughter, and sister.
The events leading to Misty's death reportedly began earlier that day at a Lowe's in North Spokane.
An altercation occurred at a nearby car wash where Misty Hirsch approached Jonathan Andersen about a purse. Following this confrontation, Misty drove away, but Andersen followed her. As she was driving south on Wandermere Road, Andersen sped up behind her vehicle. Misty slowed down and waved for him to pass, at which point he fired a gun, striking her in the head. She was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but ultimately succumbed to the gunshot wound. Her death was officially ruled a homicide.
The investigation quickly led authorities to Jonathan Andersen. He was arrested after a short police pursuit that ended when a deputy's vehicle crashed into his Ford Expedition. Initially charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and attempting to elude police, Andersen later pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter. In November 2021, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in Misty Hirsch's death. Further investigation revealed that after his arrest, Andersen attempted to tamper with a witness by sending a letter from jail, urging them to change their testimony.
Misty Renell Hirsch, born on March 25, 1981, was remembered as a loving mother to two sons. She had earned a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science and was an advocate for women experiencing domestic violence. Her family and friends recalled her as a strong and active person who enjoyed skiing, basketball, and motorbiking. She was also known for her beautiful singing voice. Her untimely death serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence.
