In the winter of 2021, the life of Christopher Bell, a 37-year-old Caucasian male, was cut short in a violent encounter near Waitts Lake in Stevens County, Washington. On the second day of February, what began as a reunion between old friends descended into a fatal confrontation. Bell had recently reconnected with a man he had known for years, Ryan F. Gilliard, after a chance meeting at the Chewelah Casino.
On that fateful day, Bell, along with a woman named Melissa Smith, went to Gilliard's home on Waitts Lake Road. The gathering took a dark turn as illegal drugs, including methamphetamine, were consumed by the three. According to Gilliard's account to the police, an argument erupted after he claimed Bell had "assaulted" Smith. However, Smith later clarified to investigators that while Bell had yelled at her, he had not been physically violent.
The situation escalated when, according to Gilliard, Bell brandished a "very large knife." Gilliard stated that he confronted Bell about his behavior multiple times before this point. Smith acknowledged that Bell was in possession of a knife but maintained that he never threatened anyone with it. Gilliard then retrieved a rifle and confronted Bell, who was by then in a car. Gilliard claimed that Bell threatened him with the knife again, at which point he fired the weapon, insisting his intention was only to scare his friend, not to kill him.
After the shooting, it was Gilliard himself who dialed 911 to report the incident. When authorities arrived at his home, they detained him. Bell, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, was airlifted to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. An investigation into the shooting commenced, leading to the arrest of Ryan F. Gilliard. He was subsequently charged in connection with Christopher Bell's death.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Ryan F. Gilliard, then 46 years old, pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree murder on January 24, 2023. As a result of his plea, he was sentenced to nearly 22 years in prison for the killing of his friend. The court also mandated three years of community custody for Gilliard upon his release from prison.
