In the fall of 2021, concern grew for Jerry Rasmussen, a 65-year-old man from Valley, Washington, after his wife, Brenda Rasmussen, reported him missing on September 27th. She told the Stevens County Sheriff's Office that Jerry had left their home several weeks prior on his motorcycle with a large sum of cash, stating he had "cabin fever." She claimed they had been arguing and that it wasn't unusual for him to be gone for extended periods. However, as investigators began speaking with other family members, suspicions arose about Brenda's account of her husband's disappearance.
Detectives soon identified Brenda and her two adult sons, Danny and Andrew Jones, as persons of interest, and the investigation shifted to a possible homicide. The family's property on Darrin Road became the focus of the search for the missing man. In November, investigators executed a search warrant at the residence. During the search, cadaver dogs indicated the presence of human remains near a newly installed storage shed on the property. This discovery intensified the investigation, even as Brenda and her son Danny had already vacated the home.
The grim truth was unearthed in early December when authorities returned to the property. After moving the shed, they discovered Jerry Rasmussen's body buried beneath it, wrapped in a blanket and plastic. An autopsy would later confirm that he had died from a gunshot wound to the head. The investigation quickly led to arrest warrants for Brenda Rasmussen and her sons.
In February 2022, Brenda Rasmussen, along with Danny and Andrew Jones, were located and apprehended in Fort Mohave, Arizona. They were initially charged with rendering criminal assistance. Brenda's father, Daniel D. Tavaglione, was also implicated and charged with rendering criminal assistance. As the case progressed, the charges against Brenda and her son Danny were elevated to include second-degree murder and unlawful disposal of human remains. Andrew Jones also faced an additional charge of unlawful disposal of human remains.
Ultimately, Brenda Rasmussen pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and tampering with a witness. She was sentenced to 19 and a half years in prison. Her sons, Danny and Andrew Jones, also pleaded guilty to charges related to their involvement in the cover-up of their stepfather's murder. The case against Daniel Tavaglione was later dismissed.
