In the quiet town of Othello, Washington, a heartbreaking incident unfolded on February 27, 2021, forever altering the lives of a local family. On that Saturday, 4-year-old Jeremiah Isaiah Tapia-Arteaga was fatally wounded. The young boy sustained a gunshot wound to his head, a devastating event that would soon become the subject of a police investigation.
Emergency services were called to a residence on East Hamlet Street in response to the shooting.
Upon their arrival, they found that family members had already rushed Jeremiah to a local hospital. From there, arrangements were made to transport him to a Spokane hospital for more advanced medical care. Tragically, Jeremiah succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the little boy's death quickly centered on his father, 27-year-old Felipe Tapia-Perez. According to police reports, Tapia-Perez was cooperative with law enforcement and admitted to accidentally firing the weapon that killed his son. He explained that he was inside his car while Jeremiah was standing outside near the passenger side window when the gun discharged.
Following the incident, Felipe Tapia-Perez was arrested and booked into the Adams County Jail. He faced multiple charges, including second-degree manslaughter and possession of a stolen firearm. The Washington State Crime Lab was called in to assist the Othello Police Department with the investigation into the tragic death of the young male child.
