On a summer evening in Tacoma, Washington, the life of 38-year-old Hispanic male Alejandro F. Lloret was brought to a violent end. It was June 26, 2022, and Lloret was at his home on East 52nd Street with his wife and another man when two brothers, Kacy and Jacy Estes, entered his backyard. The brothers, who appeared to be intoxicated, were both armed with handguns.
An argument quickly erupted between Kacy Estes and Lloret, the tension in the air thick with unresolved history.
The dispute was rooted in a decade-old criminal case. In 2009, Kacy Estes had been sentenced to over 14 years in prison for a fatal shooting, while Lloret received a five-year sentence for rendering criminal assistance. Having been released from prison just months before the confrontation, Kacy Estes and his brother believed Lloret had been a "snitch" who received a lighter sentence for cooperating with law enforcement. A witness recalled Lloret saying, "It didn't have to be like this," before Kacy Estes menacingly replied, "It's his time."
The verbal altercation escalated into a chaotic scene of gunfire. In the ensuing shootout, Lloret, both Estes brothers, and Lloret's wife were all struck by bullets. Lloret sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. His death was officially ruled a homicide by the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office.
In the aftermath of the shooting, both Kacy and Jacy Estes were arrested and charged in connection with Lloret's murder. Prosecutors charged them with murder, first-degree assault, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Kacy Estes, who was on community custody at the time of the incident, was held on $3 million bail, a reflection of his extensive criminal past. A bench warrant was also issued for the arrest of Jacy Estes, who had been hospitalized with injuries from the shootout.
