On a summer afternoon in Ferndale, Washington, a fatal encounter unfolded, leaving a community in shock and a family grieving an immense loss. Douglas Scoggins, a 58-year-old Caucasian male, was shot and killed on July 7, 2022, at his place of business, Pioneer Post and Frame Inc. The tragic event began around noon when a former employee, Todd Daniel Andersen, arrived at the company premises on Portal Way.
Andersen, who had a previous working relationship with Scoggins, reportedly met
with him for lunch. Shortly after, the meeting took a violent turn. An employee in the building heard multiple gunshots and witnessed Andersen running down the stairs. He allegedly pointed a gun at her and shouted about being stolen from before looking for another employee who had managed to escape through a window. The employee who witnessed this immediately called 911 after finding Scoggins on the second floor with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of medics who arrived at the scene, he was pronounced dead.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement launched a manhunt for Andersen, who had fled the scene. He was believed to be driving a rented silver 2020 Dodge Charger with Oregon license plates. The Ferndale Police Department identified Andersen as the suspect and charged him with first-degree murder, warning the public that he was considered armed and dangerous. The motive for the shooting appeared to be rooted in a long-standing dispute, with court documents mentioning a long-term L&I claim involving Andersen.
The search for Andersen came to a solemn end two days later in Lassen County, California. Authorities there were alerted to his possible location after he reportedly sent an email to a family member indicating he was in the Clear Creek area, a place to which he had childhood connections. As Lassen County Sheriff's Office deputies attempted to make contact with him, Andersen took his own life.
