In the hallways of Seattle's Ingraham High School, a promising young life was tragically cut short on November 8, 2022. Ebenezer Haile, a 17-year-old Black or African American male, was shot and killed, leaving a community in mourning and a school in shock. The events of that day unfolded after a fight in a school bathroom, escalating to a fatal confrontation in the hallway.
The dispute reportedly began over a belief that Haile had stolen a cell phone from the shooter.
Following the initial altercation involving Haile, his friends, and the suspect with his friends, the conflict spilled into the corridor. It was there that a 14-year-old student pulled a handgun from his backpack and fired multiple times, striking Haile. Despite the immediate response from police and medics, Haile succumbed to his injuries shortly after the attack.
The investigation led to the swift identification and arrest of the 14-year-old shooter, who was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and unlawful possession of a firearm. In June 2024, he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and assault. As a result of his plea, he is expected to remain in juvenile rehabilitation until he turns 21. Another teenager, a 15-year-old, was also implicated in the incident and faced charges of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and first-degree felony rendering of criminal assistance. This second teen pleaded guilty in 2023 to unlawful possession of a firearm and rendering criminal assistance.
In the aftermath of the shooting, questions arose regarding the school's handling of the shooter's prior behavior. It was revealed that a month before the fatal incident, the 14-year-old had been found with a knife and a BB gun at school and had reportedly threatened other students. This led to a lawsuit filed by Ebenezer Haile's family against Seattle Public Schools, alleging that the district was aware of the student's violent tendencies and failed to take adequate steps to protect its students. The lawsuit seeks to hold the school district accountable and bring about changes to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
