Michael Craig Rhem, a 58-year-old Black / African American male also known as "Big Mike," was tragically killed on August 29, 2024, in Seattle, Washington. His life was cut short when he was found shot in the head on the 7th floor of the Olive Ridge apartment building on 17th Avenue in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The shooting occurred shortly before 8:30 AM, and despite the efforts of first responders, Rhem died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
The Seattle Police Department
has been actively investigating the homicide, but so far, no arrests have been made in connection with his death. Immediately following the shooting, witnesses reported seeing a woman fleeing the building, though it is unclear if she is considered a suspect. Authorities have continued to gather evidence and pursue leads in the ongoing investigation.
Rhem was a well-known figure in his community, described by loved ones as an amazing brother, son, friend, and father. He had a passion for cooking for others, gardening, and spending time with his family. In his past, Rhem had been a gang member and served a lengthy prison sentence for a 1999 drive-by shooting. However, he had since dedicated his life to speaking about rehabilitation and faith, participating in outreach efforts with a King and Pierce County intervention group. He often wrote about his experiences and his commitment to living a respectful life guided by love. His death has left a profound void in the lives of his family and the community that he deeply impacted.
