On the afternoon of December 7, 2022, first responders rushed to a home in Vancouver’s North Salmon Creek neighborhood after a 911 call from a wounded mother, Aubree Young, reporting that her husband had shot their infant son and then himself. Deputies found three people with gunshot wounds inside the residence in the 15000 block of Northwest Fourth Place; the suspected shooter, 42-year-old David E. Stansbury Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene.
The mother and her baby—identified publicly as Kymani Young, a 6-month-old male—were transported in critical condition to area hospitals. Investigators described the attack as an act of domestic violence inside the family home.
Despite intensive medical care, Kymani succumbed to his injuries two days later, early on December 9, with family by his side. News outlets and community updates in the days that followed identified the parents and detailed the extent of the mother’s injuries, noting that a bullet remained lodged in her spine and that the community had organized support as she faced a long recovery. The case drew regional attention as another instance of intimate-partner violence turning deadly, with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office leading the investigation and confirming the child’s death following the initial shooting.
Authorities identified Stansbury as the sole assailant and indicated that, because he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene, there would be no arrest in the case.
