In the spring of 1902, the life of Richard W. Slusher, a 30-year-old male Deputy Sheriff from Pineville, Kentucky, was cut tragically short. His death on Friday, April 11, 1902, was not the result of a confrontation with a dangerous criminal, but rather a cruel twist of fate that occurred while he was returning from his duties. The incident that led to his untimely demise began a day earlier, on April 10, 1902, aboard a Louisville and Middlesborough Railroad train near Rowland.
