On September 12, 2016, Farmer was found inside a vehicle with a fatal gunshot wound. He was transported to Pineville Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead. At the time of his passing, Farmer was a coal truck driver.

Later, the murder charge against Sarah Farmer was reduced to manslaughter. This decision was reportedly made after discussions with Eddie's family. Ultimately, Sarah Farmer was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the death of her husband.
