In the summer of 2016, the life of 37-year-old Houston Ulyss Lankford was tragically cut short in Pineville, Kentucky. A man described as an avid 'Mountain Man' who enjoyed ginseng-ing, Lankford was fatally shot in the early morning hours of July 23rd. The events of that night unfolded in the back country near Pineville, where a gathering involving partying and shooting guns took a dark turn.
An argument erupted between Lankford and Melissa J. Sanchez, the mother of his children.
The dispute reportedly centered on a lost gun and accusations of infidelity. Witnesses later recounted that earlier in the day, the couple had been engaged in the reckless act of playing Russian roulette. As the argument escalated, Lankford stopped the vehicle they were in, found the gun on top of the car, and handed it to Sanchez.
The verbal altercation continued, with Sanchez reportedly uttering the words, 'I'll kill you.' She then stepped out of the vehicle and pulled the trigger twice, but the gun did not fire. After getting back into the car, she pulled the trigger two more times. The final pull discharged the weapon, inflicting a fatal wound to Lankford's neck.
Upon their arrival, police found Sanchez next to Lankford's body, repeatedly stating that she had killed him and asking the officers to take her life as well. She was taken into custody and subsequently indicted for murder. The case proceeded through the court system, with legal arguments focusing on the evidence presented, including autopsy photographs of Lankford's wound.
