In the winter of 1910, tragedy struck the community of Bell County, Kentucky, with the death of Deputy Sheriff Gordon Givens. A dedicated male lawman, he was killed in the line of duty on Saturday, January 29, 1910, while attempting to arrest an intoxicated miner. The encounter turned fatal when the miner opened fire, mortally wounding Deputy Givens.
