In the winter of 1910, tragedy struck the community of Bell County, Kentucky, with the death of Deputy Sheriff Gordon Givens. A dedicated male lawman, he was killed in the line of duty on Saturday, January 29, 1910, while attempting to arrest an intoxicated miner. The encounter turned fatal when the miner opened fire, mortally wounding Deputy Givens.
Despite his severe injuries, Deputy Givens managed to return fire, hitting his assailant twice. His courageous actions were not enough to save his own life, and he succumbed to the gunshot wounds. His ultimate sacrifice underscored the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the region during that era.
The man responsible for Deputy Givens' death was apprehended and charged with murder. However, he would never face a jury for his crime. Several months after the shooting, while incarcerated at the county jail, the suspect took his own life. During a visit from his wife, he managed to slit his own throat, bringing a grim and solitary end to the judicial process. Deputy Givens was laid to rest in the Middlesboro Cemetery in Bell County.
