In the line of duty, Deputy Sheriff Andy Downs, a 35-year-old male, lost his life on a Thursday, the 4th of July, in 1907. He was attempting to arrest a man who was suspected of operating an illegal drinking establishment in Somerset, Kentucky. During the attempt, the suspect opened fire with a handgun, fatally wounding Deputy Downs at the scene.
