In the line of duty, Deputy Sheriff Andy Downs, a 35-year-old male, lost his life on a Thursday, the 4th of July, in 1907. He was attempting to arrest a man who was suspected of operating an illegal drinking establishment in Somerset, Kentucky. During the attempt, the suspect opened fire with a handgun, fatally wounding Deputy Downs at the scene.
The individual responsible for the shooting was apprehended and subsequently convicted of murder. A sentence of 13 years was handed down for the crime. However, the day after his conviction, the suspect managed to escape from the Pulaski County Jail and remained at large for a significant period. It wasn't until December of 1936 that he was recaptured by state troopers in Mount Vernon. Following his capture, he was sent to the state penitentiary to serve out his 13-year sentence. Deputy Downs was survived by his wife and child.
