In the rugged terrain of Menifee County, Kentucky, a dedicated Federal Prohibition Agent by the name of Robert E. Duff, a 44-year-old male, met a tragic and violent end on December 9, 1922. While in the pursuit of illegal moonshine operations, an endeavor fraught with peril, Agent Duff and his fellow officers were led to a remote log house by the unmistakable scent of 'mash'.
As the lawmen approached the front door, it was suddenly thrown open, and a hail of gunfire erupted from within, killing Agent Duff instantly in the ambush.
The investigation that followed the cold-blooded murder of the federal agent pointed to a member of the notorious Ballard family as the perpetrator. The Ballards were well-known in the region for their deep involvement in the illicit production of moonshine. The day after Agent Duff's slaying, the violence continued to escalate. Special Deputy David Treadway was shot and killed while riding with a posse that had been formed to track down and apprehend those responsible for Agent Duff's death. This second killing only intensified the resolve of law enforcement to bring the responsible parties to justice, leading to a significant manhunt for the suspects.
