In the quiet community of West Paducah, Kentucky, a devastating event unfolded on December 1, 1997, that would forever alter the lives of many. Jessica Jeanette James, a 17-year-old female student at Heath High School, was tragically killed in a school shooting. The incident took place as a group of students gathered for a morning prayer circle.
On that day, 14-year-old Michael Carneal, a freshman at the school, arrived with a. 22-caliber pistol in his backpack.
He opened fire on the prayer group, fatally wounding Jessica and two of her schoolmates, 14-year-old Nicole Hadley and 15-year-old Kayce Steger. Five other students were also injured in the attack. Jessica was rushed to Western Baptist Hospital where she died in surgery later that afternoon.
Carneal was immediately taken into custody at the scene of the shooting. In October 1998, he pleaded guilty but mentally ill to three counts of murder, five counts of attempted murder, and one count of burglary. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. Authorities noted that Carneal had been teased by other students and that he had writings indicating 'pent-up frustration that boiled over'.
