On October 26, 2014, Joy A. Champion, a 60-year-old female, was tragically killed in her home in Cadiz, Kentucky. A retired teacher who had dedicated over 30 years to the Trigg County Elementary School, she was known as a cherished member of the community and the Cadiz Church of Christ. Her life, along with the lives of her 62-year-old husband, Lindsey, and their 31-year-old daughter, Emily, was cut short by multiple gunshot wounds in a violent encounter that initially appeared to be a home invasion.
The sole survivor of the incident was the couple's son, 36-year-old Ryan Champion. He initially presented himself as a victim, telling authorities that a 22-year-old acquaintance, Vito Riservato, had entered the home, tied him and his sister up, and then shot his parents when they returned. Ryan claimed that he managed to 'turn the tables' on Riservato and kill him in self-defense. The bodies of Joy, Lindsey, Emily, and Riservato were all discovered at the Champion residence.
However, the investigation by the Kentucky State Police soon unraveled Ryan Champion’s story. Evidence quickly pointed to his involvement, and he was arrested just days later. Authorities revealed that the tragic event was not a random act of violence but a calculated murder-for-hire plot orchestrated by Ryan himself. He had enlisted Riservato to kill his family, and after the murders were carried out, Ryan killed Riservato to silence him. His sister, Emily, had been bound with duct tape before she was shot.
Ultimately, Ryan Champion was charged with four counts of capital murder and one count of kidnapping. To avoid a potential death penalty, he pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. An accomplice, Ann Plotkin, was also charged for her role in the planning stages of the murders. She pleaded guilty to three counts of complicity to murder and received a 22-year prison sentence.
